Nascente Viva is a social and ecological project. It is located in the Jaguapirú-Bororó indigenous village in Dourados-MS, Brazil.
Brief description
The main objective is, together with the indigenous community, the ecological restoration of the Jaguapirú spring and its riparian forest. To maintain the project’s future, environmental education in schools is part of every stage of the project.
The village schools are the basis of every step we take in the project and are involved in all activities as central partners. Students, teachers and staff members are all involved in activities such as building the cistern and nursery and planting activities. We are currently working with the Guateka Intercultural Indigenous State School, where the cistern and nursery are located, and with the Tengatuí Marangatu Indigenous Municipal School, where the seed house is located.
The objectives of the Nascente Viva project: 1. Restore the source of the Jaguapirú River 2. Creation of the riverbed 3. Renaturalisation of the river banks 4. Environmental education 5. Building a seedling nursery 6. Building a cistern 7. Construction of a seed nursery
The total area to be renaturalised is around 10 hectares.
Origin of the project
The idea for the Nascente Viva project was born in 2017, due to the silting up of the Jaguapirú stream and automatically the lack of water. Lenir Paiva Flores Garcia, director of the Dourados Indigenous Women’s Association at the time (AMID), contacted the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) and the Tarahumara Fans e.V. association (a non-profit organisation in Frankfurt with a social and sustainable purpose) in search of support. The Association of Organic Producers of Mato Grosso do Sul (APOMS in Glória de Dourados-MS) and indigenous advocate Aquiles Paulus soon joined the organising team.
Empowerment is important and guarantees continuity. Gradually, local organisations and indigenous people must take on more and more responsibility. A co-operation agreement has therefore been concluded with the Guateka Marçal de Souza State Indigenous School. The school is based in the indigenous village. The school’s teacher, Cléber, was hired to offer practical environmental education to the students and has since been responsible for the project’s cistern and nursery, along with other students who are the project’s environmental agents.
Also in 2022, we signed a co-operation agreement with the JUSTITIA Institute in Dourados, represented by Aquiles Paulus, who deals with indigenous causes. The institute also manages the financial side of the project locally.
The project has received three awards to date: 1. ‘Marco Verde’ Award 05.06.2019. Awarded by the Dourados Environment Institute. Received in recognition of all the actions of the ‘Nascente viva’ project.
2. Green Heart Award 27.09.2021. Awarded by the Dourados City Council. Professor Cajetano Vera received the award for his particular commitment to the project. The aim of this award is to honour people who have stood out in the fight to defend the environment
3. Sustainable Schools Award 16.10.2023. Awarded by the Santillana Foundation. Nascente Viva was one of the 5 finalists for the International Sustainable Schools Award.

Procedure
1. Restoration of permanent reserves: a. Removal of herbaceous and invasive vegetation and removal of sand from the stream channel with a backhoe loader b. Planting native seedlings c. Periodic fertilisation d. Maintenance of the area
2. Environmental education a. Awareness-raising: a process of alertness, the first step towards systemic thinking b. Competence: the ability to evaluate and act effectively in the System c. Responsibility: recognising the human being as the main protagonist d. Understanding: knowledge of the components and mechanisms that govern natural systems e. Citizenship: taking an active part and rescuing rights and promoting a new ethic capable of reconciling the environment and society
