Nascente Viva is a social and ecological project. It is located in the indigenous village of Jaguapirú-Bororó, in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
The main objective is, together with the indigenous community, the ecological restoration of the Jaguapirú spring and its riparian forest. To ensure the future of the project, environmental education in schools is part of all stages of the project.
The village schools are the foundation of every step we take in the project and are involved in all activities as key partners. Students, teachers, and staff members are all involved in activities such as building the cistern and nursery and planting. We currently work with the Guateka Intercultural Indigenous State School, where the cistern and nursery house are located, and with the Tengatuí Marangatu Indigenous Municipal School, where the seed house is located.
The objectives of the Nascente Viva project:
Restoration of the source of the Jaguapirú River
Creation of the riverbed
Renaturalization of the riverbanks
Environmental education
Construction of a seedling nursery
Construction of a cistern
Construction of a seed nursery
The total area to be renaturalized is approximately 10 hectares.
Origin of the project
The idea for the Nascente Viva project was born in 2017, due to the silting up of the Jaguapirú stream and the resulting water shortage. Lenir Paiva Flores Garcia, director of the Association of Indigenous Women of Dourados (AMID) at the time, contacted the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) and the Tarahumara Fans e. V. association (a non-profit association in Frankfurt with a social and sustainable purpose) in search of support. The Mato Grosso do Sul Association of Organic Producers (APOMS in Glória de Dourados-MS) and indigenous rights lawyer Aquiles Paulus soon joined the organizing team.
Empowerment is important and ensures continuity. Gradually, local organizations and indigenous peoples should take on more and more responsibilities. Therefore, a cooperation agreement was signed with the Guateka Marçal de Souza State Indigenous School. The school is located in the indigenous village. Professor Cléber from the school was hired to provide practical environmental education to students and has since been responsible for the project’s cistern and nursery, together with other students and scholarship recipients who are environmental agents for the project. Also in 2022, we signed a cooperation agreement with the JUSTITIA Institute in Dourados, represented by Aquiles Paulus, which deals with indigenous causes. The institute also manages the financial side of the project locally.
The project has received three awards to date:
“Marco Verde” Award, June 5, 2019. Awarded by the Dourados Environmental Institute. Received in recognition of all the actions of the “Nascente viva” project.
“Coração Verde” Award 09.27.2021. Awarded by the Dourados City Council. Professor Cajetano Vera received the award for his personal commitment to the project. This award aims to honor people who have stood out in the fight for and defense of the environment.
